Hi! I'm Lauren and I love to teach art.
My passion for international education and global citizenship is a lifelong story. As a teen, I served as a summer student ambassador in England, Ireland, and Wales and later co-led a summer literacy camp in Jamaica with my Girl Scout Troop. As an adult, I have lived and taught in France and Liberia, along with a month volunteering as an educator in South Africa. I loved teaching abroad, cultivating my fluency in French, immersing myself in global communities, and overcoming the exciting challenges that come with living around the world. Unfortunately, the Ebola epidemic cut my time in Africa short, which led to a pause in my time abroad. In the United States, I taught as an art teacher, serving students from 18 countries which fed my passion for working with international groups. After spending the last several years within my home country, I am eager to contribute my expertise and passion to an international community.
As a teacher, my mission is to get to know my students as individuals, so I can tailor lessons and instruction to their benefit. I consider my classroom an inclusive sanctuary for all to explore, experiment, and express their creativity. My curriculum is a blend of student-centered projects exploring creative problem solving, a variety of media, world art history, artmaking techniques, literacy, and collaborative projects. Each project progressively builds on the skills from the previous, which empowers my learners to feel confident in their creative abilities and continue refining their technical skills. We also learn how to talk about art in a constructive way, and practice critiques that develop students’ skills in effective and kind feedback. This practice also helps students refine their artwork based on suggestions from their peers and fosters a team environment. I also integrate literacy into the art room. In elementary, projects are based on children’s literature, and in middle and high school, students practice art vocabulary and written reflections about their artwork and creative process. I assign a combination of both individual and collaborative projects, to give students opportunities to explore their own creativity, as well as build a sense of community within the classroom. After years honing my craft as a teacher, I am prepared and confident in my ability to lead a productive and well-managed classroom for your students.
In the past I’ve supported my school community outside the classroom through hosting extracurricular clubs; creating posters and banners for events; decorating school display cases; and creating backdrops, costumes, and props for theater productions. In my last role, I earned an award for outstanding connections and positive relationship building with my community, and I look forward to expanding on that in my next role.
I am excited for opportunities to contribute to the school community through the empowerment of our young artists. I am eager to use my expertise to spearhead a new artistic community.
